Hybrid Vehicles

Nowadays many companies around the world are challenging each other and taking pride to produce what we call the hybrid vehicles or the green cars. Many companies became interested in making this machine like Nissan, Volvo, Mitsubishi and Renault. The questions we must ask ourselves now are will this affect our lives for the better and what are the advantages of it. In this assignment I am going to talk about the history of hybrid cars and also discuss some advantages that show to us the good things about this machine and the disadvantages of it.

First of all, what do we mean by hybrid cars or the green vehicles? The definition of it is an automobile that works using two or more sources like electrical energy and solar energy and it uses a battery to store this energy to run that auto.

History of hybrid cars:

The first electric car was built in 1828. Ányos Jedlik, who made the first electric motor and created the small car running by his new motor; after six years, in 1834, the first American DC electrical motor was made by Vermont blacksmith Thomas Davenport. He operated on a circular electrified track. In 1835, Professor Sibrandus Stratingh and his assistant Christopher Becker created a small-scale electrical car. It was powered by non-rechargeable primary cells. Scotsman Robert Davidson built in 1838 an electric locomotive that reached a speed of 4 mph equal to 6.4 km/h.  Between 1832 and 1839, Robert Anderson of Scotland created a crude electrical carriage. Trade electric vehicles flourished in Europe because of Gaston Plante in France in 1865 and his fellow countryman Camille Faure in 1881. In 1867, at the World Exposition in Paris an Austrian Franz Kravogl put his electric-powered two-wheel cycle on display. France and Britain were the first nations that supported the development of electric vehicles.

Vehicle types:

Cycle-type and two-wheel vehicles.  There are a lot of cycles like mopeds, electric bicycles, and even electric kick scooters which are a simple type of hybrid working by an internal combustion engine or electric motor. Human power and motor torque are added together. Some hybrid bicycles use power generators using the pedals. This action is converted into electricity.

Advantages of hybrid vehicles:

1)      Hybrid Car Maintenance:

In general hybrid cars cost more than normal cars, but the good thing is they don’t need much maintenance, such as petrol and gasoline cars and don't need any type of additional maintenance on their components. The only maintenance that car may need is the replacement of the air filter on some battery systems every 60,000 kilometers and changing the oil filter as normal vehicles every 5,000 or 10,000 km.

2)      Air pollution of hybrid vehicles:

Hybrid cars minimize the air pollution more than gasoline cars. According to the Green Car Club, the hybrid cars are helping the environment.

3)      Using light materials on hybrid vehicles:

By reducing the weight of the cars they can let the vehicle run more kilo metes. A hybrid car uses less energy as you accelerate or drive up a road. They use carbon fiber or aluminium and magnesium to reduce weight.

Disadvantages of hybrid vehicle:

·         Limited Speed:

One of the disadvantages is limited speed. It continues to be a common consumer complaint in all hybrid lists. Especially in the first generations of hybrid vehicles, consumers complained of the lack of power. Hybrids reportedly do not accelerate as quickly as gasoline cars. Reaching and maintaining highway speeds can be a challenge. Hybrid technologies tried to solve this disadvantage. New models show faster acceleration than their earlier versions and are better able to handle highway speeds, but there is still a chance for more improvement.

Extreme Sports or X Games

I know you will be surprised when you know about my extreme sports. I started doing those things around five years ago here in the UAE region. It was highly entertaining. I enjoyed it a lot and if anyone wants to experience it with me it will not be my responsibility if he gets hurt, but as a favor I will help him. There are many places here in the Gulf area if you are interested.

First of all, what does extreme mean? My definition is to put your life in danger and the internet definition is an extreme sport (also called freesport, action sport, and adventure sport). It’s a popular term for certain activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger. These activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear or spectacular stunts.

My best sports are riding a water scooter, also called a jet ski and motorbike ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle). In this piece of writing only I will talk about one, the jet ski.   The table below shows some types of jet ski and the option of each and the uses:

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

  • Otherwise known as "stand-ups," these require the rider to stand the entire time he or she is riding.
  • Exceptionally maneuverable and are often used for tricks or flips.
  • Difficult to control and should be used by athletic and/or more experienced jet-skiers.

  • Like the solo craft, these carry only one rider, but he or she has to sit, not stand.
  • Fantastic mobility and are great around turns and corners.
  • Tend to be slightly more stable than the solo craft, but they still require a certain amount of athleticism to ride

  • Two-seaters are perfect for a day out on the open ocean with your loved one.
  • While they're not quite as fast or as mobile as either of the single-seaters, they're no slouch.
  • Corner well and remain stable at high speeds.
  • At slower speeds, however, they have a tendency to lose their balance quickly.

  • Becoming more popular every year.
  • Good for large families due to their size and safety.
  • Easy to control, but mobility is limited.
  • Their size and strength also makes them perfect for towing relatively large objects through the water.

I have two of them, a 2010 Sea-Doo RXT 215 it’s 215hp-rated, 1,494cc three-cylinder EFI, supercharged/intercooled, and a solo craft also called a Stand-Up 2009 Yamaha SuperJet; it's 701cc, 2-cylinder, 2-stroke , but I upgraded it to more than 1000cc for extreme reasons.

The Stand-Up or Solo craft is my favorite. I trained for this sport when I was in Jabal Al Danah; it's 250 kms away from Abu Dhabi. It’s a nice place, quiet and not crowded by riders so you can learn very quickly. In order to enjoy this hobby, you must do some stunts and interesting movements, such as 360 degree flips, backflips, rolls, big throw and all-action diving called freestyle. Last year my friend won the championship here in Abu Dhabi and he got the first place, but I was not registered because I had something to finish during the championship.

My advice to those who practise this sport, whether professional or beginners, is to be careful with these games because your life is important for you and for your family; didn’t let them get worried or afraid.

Conference of GCC Economic & Financial Integration

Sunday 23rd October 2011, students of elite class in HCT went to Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi with Dr. Hedley to attend the GCC Economic & Financial Integration Forum (Opportunities & Challenges) in the morning. We registered and listened to the presentation.

Dr. Jassim Al Mannai, Director General of the Arab Monetary Fund was concerned with economic and financial integration and international experiences.

Dr. Abdul Aziz Aluwaisheg, was the first speaker. He is the Director General International Economic Relations GCC Secretariat. Mainly he talked about the historical developments and an agreement made last year by GCC countries in the pursuit of trade liberalization and lower tariffs.

The second speaker was Lukas Stemitsiotis, Head of Unit in the European Commission, EU. He talked about the problems and challenges facing the Euro region. In recent days, the problem which is facing Greece is they can’t repay their debts. And they are trying to find the solution for that problem.

Dr Aladdin Rillo is the Director and Chief Economist ASEAN Integration Monitoring Office.  He said that the architects and engineers have mutual status in ASEAN and the difference between AEEAN and EU and the GCC that is that 50% of the domestic production in ASEAN is the services sector. The point of ASEAN was integration of capital markets. The hard thing was the developed countries like Singapore and Brunei can’t share a currency with undeveloped countries like Cambodia and Laos. Also he stressed the importance of justice in the communication and economic development.

By the end of this conference they let the audience ask questions that related to this conference. Moreover they gave us certificates of appreciation for attending that conference.

Summary: The fight against breast cancer.

In the UAE, 12000 people walked 3.6Km to raise awareness and helping to provide support for breast cancer patients.

Last Friday in Dubai October 28, 2011, more than 12000 people join and take part in the largest walk in the UAE for supporting the breast cancer patients at Burjuman. They waited to register early in the morning. Each adult charged Dh50 and a child Dh30 to participate in the event. The entertainment for families included band, free drumming and breakfast offers.

Sabina Khandwani spokesperson for the campaign told the news. The money that they got it will provide for free X-rays and help provide support for breast cancer patients and educate women. “It’s important to keep reminding the target audience,” she said.

The doctors are try explain that breast cancer is a major killer in the UAE, but early checks can easily save lives. The bad news is women 10 years are younger than the world average, But the good news is that more women in UAE are becoming aware of the need to take care of themselves.

The only problems that facing us are that older Emirati woman cannot accept that advice, but they are learning from the younger generation in their families. In second, Breast Cancer tests are not covered by health insurance. This month many health care centres give half price discounts for a mammogram check.

My last vacation to Malaysia

Last July, I went to Malaysia with my family to spend our vacation there. We went to a lot of beautiful places like Kuala Lumpur, the capital, Langkawi and Penang.

In Kuala Lumpur, we went to Genting which is about half an hour from the capital. Genting is located on top of the Kuala Lumpur Mountains. Over there, there is an amusement park called Genting Park which I think is the most enjoyable place for fun beside the park in Sunway lagoon resort. The best and fastest way to reach Genting is to use the cable car “Telfrek”; and it is around fifteen minutes from down station to up station, while if you went by a car it will take around 1 hour. The weather on top of the mountain is totally different compared to down and the day we went there it was cloudy and very cold. We spent more than 10 hours over there from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. playing with different games. When we were back home from Genting, we went to the “Night Market” which is a huge market that has many traditional products with surprisingly very cheap prices.

The day after, we went to Sunway lagoon resort because they have different attractions such as Water Park, Amusement Park, Extreme Park, Wildlife Park, and Scream Park. It was really a fantastic place to visit because they gather different destinations together, the watery area, the playing area, Animal Park and many more.  Then, we went to the highest building in Kuala Lumpur which is Kuala Tower to have our lunch there. Its construction started in 1991 and finished in 1995, and it reaches 421 m (1,381 ft) and 335 m (1,099 ft) roofs, which currently makes it the second tallest freestanding tower in the world. The rest of the tower below has a stairwell and an elevator to reach the upper area.  The tower is the landmark of Kuala Lumpur with nearby PETRONAS Tower (Twin Towers).

Then, we moved to Langkawi which is the best destination because it is far from high buildings, factories and constructions companies. It mainly depends on its nature. Langkawi is made up of 104 islands and Langkawi is the largest residential island of all of these islands. In Langkawi, we went to the second highest peak there which is “Gunung Mat Chinchang” by a cable car and it is over 700 meters. From this highest peak we saw amazing views and we walked on the Langkawi Sky Bridge which is located there. Also, we went to the “Pregnant Maiden Lake” by boat which was really like a pregnant woman and we enjoyed our time by taking photos.  Langkawi Mangrove Tours was an extremely fantastic destination because we did many things on this tour such as Bat Cave, Fish Farm, Eagle Feeding, and Mangrove Sightseeing. Also, in Langkawi they have an Eagle Square and some shops beside it. Furthermore, we visited Penang which is one of the most developed and economically important states in the country. In Penang, we went to a tea and coffee factory. We also went to Penang Hill and we visited the Indian temple and a mosque there.

Last but not least, our trip to Malaysia was really fantastic and a wonderful place to visit. We spent a very nice time and we enjoyed our time there.

Hedley's trip to the Niah Caves.

Thirty years ago, Hedley accompanied by his wife and her daughter Kate, travelled from Brunei to the Niah caves in Sarawak, Malaysia. They travelled by car, ferry boat and foot. He started to move out early in the morning and arrived at dusk. He took a rest in a government rest house. During his trip he saw a lot of beautiful views like caves, birds, bamboo poles. In addition, he saw men climbing to scrape birds nests off the roof of the cave in order to sell them to the Chinese. He came back the next day to his house.
